Middle School Soccer News – 9-24-17

This past week our Middle School Soccer Team was eager to take the pitch after some unexpected time off, and faced a full run of matches against Holy Cross, Faith and Legacy.

In the first game of the week versus Holy Cross, the team got off to a fast start and didn’t let up. Our defense led by Katie, Max, Paul and Mary clamped down early and kept most of the play from ever reaching our keepers. Our team worked well together, displayed great energy throughout the match, and added goals by Hector, Ben Hammontree, Deborah, Kelly, Joseph, Jackson and Will to win handily by a score of 8-0.

On Tuesday, the team was back on the pitch again, this time to face Faith in a match that proved to be a tale of two halves. Early in the first half, Jackson found the back of the net to give us some breathing room and put the team up 1-0. Our defense played incredibly well during the first half, led by the likes of Amanda, Jenna, Mason, Hector, Joseph and Josiah. The real heroes, though, were our keepers Cade and Will, who simply refused to blink and calmly corralled each ball fired their way to keep their team in the game. The Centurions took the field with great tempo in the 2nd half, and some sweet teamwork in the opponent’s box led to a nice follow-up goal by Ben Moore to put the team up by 2. While our defense played well down the stretch, Faith’s offensive line continued to pressure and finally broke through with the last 3 goals of the game to take the match 3-2. It was certainly a tough loss for our team, but at the end of the game you could tell that they were still in good spirits and ready to face their next challenge on Thursday.

Thursday’s game against Legacy was certainly the match of the week. The team went “on the road” to face a Legacy team that pressed early and worked through our defense to take a 1-0 lead at the 12th minute. Going back to the previous match, this was now the 4th unanswered goal against our Centurions, so everyone was waiting to see how they would respond. And respond they did! The trio of Joseph, Jackson and Deborah got things back on track when Jackson crossed to Deborah for the goal, making it a 1-1 game. Our team wouldn’t celebrate for long as Legacy answered with 2 more goals and was about to take a 3-1 game into the half, but Jackson scored to cut Legacy’s lead to 1. Our team took the pitch in the 2nd half with Alexis and Jonah solidifying our defense, and Deborah chipping one in to even the score at 3-3. Legacy pressed with some great cross-field passing and once again went up by 1 with less than 15 minutes left on the clock. Still, our Centurions seemed unfazed and cheered each other on. Joseph and the offense then went on a tear over the remaining minutes of the game to put our team up 5-4 to take the match. The team proved to each other that they could face adversity, come from behind and rally to win a tight game. Way to go Centurions!

This week our team sets to improve upon their 4-3-0 record in a rematch against ICS.
